How to Clear Hulu Cache on Mac

Hulu has no Mac app, so its cache lives in your browser. Remove hulu.com's data alone in Safari, Chrome or Firefox, and keep every other login.

To clear Hulu cache on a Mac, remove the stored data for hulu.com in the browser you watch it in: in Safari that is Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, then select hulu.com and click Remove. Hulu has no Mac app, so there is no cache setting inside Hulu itself, and removing only hulu.com’s data keeps you signed in everywhere else.

Does Hulu have a Mac app?

No. Hulu’s list of supported devices names web browsers, phones and tablets, TV devices and a Windows app, and there is no macOS app on it (Hulu: What devices support the Hulu app?). On a Mac you watch at hulu.com.

Hulu’s requirements page lists Mac OS X 10.13 or later and the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari (Hulu: Computer and browser requirements). The same page says JavaScript and cookies must be on, and that you may be asked to turn on location services.

That means every file Hulu keeps on your Mac sits inside your browser’s data. Hulu says so itself: for computer browsers, the steps for clearing cache “vary depending on which browser you’re using” (Hulu: Clear cache and data).

Clear hulu.com data only (recommended)

Hulu’s own browser guide tells you to remove everything (Hulu: Clear browser cache). That works, but it also signs you out of every other site. Try the site-only route first.

Safari

  1. Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings.
  2. Click Privacy.
  3. Click Manage Website Data.
  4. Select hulu.com in the list, then click Remove.

Do not click Remove All unless you mean to clear every site. Apple notes that removing website data may sign you out of websites and can change cookies used by other apps (Apple: Clear your cache and cookies in Safari on Mac). For more Safari options, see how to clear Safari cache on Mac.

Google Chrome

  1. Click the More menu (three dots) at the top right, then Settings.
  2. Click Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies.
  3. Click See all site data and permissions.
  4. Search for hulu at the top right.
  5. Click the Delete (bin) icon next to hulu.com, then confirm with Delete.

These steps come from Google Chrome Help. Our guide on how to clear Chrome cache on Mac covers the rest of Chrome’s options.

Firefox

The quickest way is to open hulu.com, click the shield icon to the left of the address bar, then click Clear cookies and site data. To do it from settings instead:

  1. Choose Firefox > Settings in the menu bar.
  2. Select Privacy and security and go to Browsing data.
  3. Click Clear data for specific sites.
  4. Type hulu in Search websites, then click Remove All Shown.
  5. Click Save Changes, then OK to confirm.

When to clear the whole browser cache instead

Clear everything when Hulu still fails after removing its own data, or when other streaming sites misbehave too. This is Hulu’s official advice: it recommends clearing the browser cache “on a regular basis” for stability (Hulu: Clear browser cache).

  • Safari: in Manage Website Data, click Remove All, then confirm (Apple). This signs you out of sites.
  • Chrome: More > Delete browsing data, pick a time range, tick Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then click Delete data (Google Chrome Help).
  • Firefox: Firefox > Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data, set When to Everything, tick only Temporary cached files and pages, then click Clear (Mozilla: How to clear the Firefox cache). This keeps your logins.

The steps are the same on a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro or desktop Mac, and on macOS Sonoma, Sequoia, Tahoe and macOS 27 Golden Gate, because they live in the browser rather than in macOS.

Hulu’s own fixes for playback errors on a computer

If you see buffering, freezing or “We’re having trouble playing this”, Hulu suggests working through these in order and testing a video between each one (Hulu: How do I stop Hulu from buffering?):

  1. Check your connection with a speed test.
  2. Power cycle: turn off your Mac (and your modem and router, if you can), wait a few minutes, then turn them back on.
  3. Clear the browser cache.
  4. Quit and reopen the browser, closing other apps too.
  5. Try a private window, which skips stored cookies, cache and extensions.
  6. Make sure JavaScript and cookies are on.
  7. Allow location services if you have a Live TV plan.
  8. Try another supported browser.

One detail most guides miss: picture quality depends on the browser. Hulu streams at up to 720p in Safari on macOS when no external display is connected or the display supports HDCP 1.4. Chrome on a Mac only gets 720p with no external display connected, and Firefox tops out at 480p (Hulu: Computer and browser requirements). If Hulu looks soft rather than broken, switching browser may fix it where clearing cache won’t.

Signing back in

Removing hulu.com’s data logs you out of Hulu. Go to hulu.com, click Log In and enter your email and password. The browser may ask for your location again. Allow it, because Hulu says Hulu.com may not load without location services (Hulu: Computer and browser requirements).

The faster way: MacWipe

MacWipe cannot remove one site’s data, so for a single misbehaving hulu.com, use the browser steps above. Where it helps is the full clear. Smart Scan finds the cache folders for Safari, Chrome and Firefox, plus browser data such as cookies, history and local storage, in one pass. It leaves a browser’s history and cookie files alone while that browser is open, so it never touches a database mid-write.

You see every item and why it is safe before anything goes. Caches are deleted, since browsers rebuild them; cookie and history files go to the Trash. MacWipe runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon and Intel. It is signed with a Developer ID and notarised by Apple.

Download MacWipe and run a free scan.
